ScrewDog Usage Tips

Follow the steps below for the best results, then review the tips at the bottom if you're looking to perfect your spiral.

Tips for Spiral Success

Most people get the hang of it after just a few hot dogs.

Use a Surface with Grip

ScrewDog works by allowing the hot dog to roll, not slide. A wooden or textured cutting board provides the traction needed for a smooth spiral. Very smooth or wet surfaces can cause the hot dog to slide instead of rotate.

Let the Hot Dog Roll Naturally

Avoid forcing the hot dog forward. Instead, push ScrewDog straight ahead with steady pressure and let the hot dog rotate naturally beneath it. The rolling motion is what creates the continuous spiral.

Use Moderate Pressure

Finding the right pressure makes all the difference. Too little pressure won't allow the blade to cut. Too much pressure can flatten or tear the hot dog. Apply firm, steady pressure and let the blade do the work.

Stay Aligned

Keep ScrewDog centered over the hot dog throughout each pass. If the device twists or drifts off center, simply reposition the blade into the previous cut and continue. Small corrections are normal and won't affect the finished result.

Align

Place the hot dog on a firm, flat surface. Position ScrewDog over the right tip with the blade aligned to start the spiral.

Press

Press down firmly until the blade punctures the hot dog.

Roll

Roll forward with steady pressure, letting the hot dog rotate naturally as the spiral forms.

Repeat

Pull back, reinsert the blade where the spiral ended, and continue until you've reached the other end.

Grill

Grill as usual. As it cooks, the spiral opens, crisps, and is ready for your favorite toppings.

Getting Started Guide

  • Before you begin, set yourself up for a smooth, consistent spiral.

    • Use a firm, flat cutting board or similar work surface with enough room to roll the hot dog forward.
    • A wooden or textured cutting board provides better grip than smooth glass, stone, or polished countertops.
    • Keep both the cutting surface and the hot dog dry to prevent slipping
  • Place ScrewDog on top of the hot dog to begin the spiral.

    • Place the hot dog horizontally in front of you.
    • Position ScrewDog over the right tip of the hot dog.
    • Align the blade with the center of the hot dog before pressing down.
    • This is your Starting Position.
  • Begin the spiral by puncturing the hot dog.

    • Press down firmly until the blade punctures the hot dog.
    • Use only enough pressure to start the cut.
    • Once the blade is engaged, the rolling motion does most of the work.
  • Create the spiral with a smooth rolling motion.

    • Push ScrewDog straight forward using steady, moderate pressure.
    • Let the hot dog roll naturally beneath the blade.
    • Continue until you've reached the end of your comfortable forward motion.
    • This is your Ending Position.
  • Complete the spiral one section at a time.

    • Pull the hot dog back to the Starting Position.
    • Place the blade into the end of the previous cut.
    • Repeat the same rolling motion until the spiral reaches the opposite end.
    • A typical hot dog takes a little more than two passes.
  • Watch the spiral come to life.

    • Grill or cook the hot dog as you normally would.
    • As it cooks, the spiral naturally opens and crisps.
    • Finish with your favorite toppings and enjoy.
